Yakult is the original probiotic; each little bottle contains at least 6.5 billion bacteria, of the unique Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain isolated by Dr Shirota over 75 years ago. Yakult's unique story originates back in 1920s’ Kyoto, when scientist Dr Minoru Shirota began research into a ground-breaking theory about the health implications of bacteria in the gut. Interested in the potential benefits of lactic acid bacteria, Dr Shirota resolved to use this concept in a simple but practical way to help people.

Dr Shirota firmly believed that complete health means not just physical fitness, but also good mental, social and cultural wellbeing – a view he summed up in the phrase 'Working on a Healthy Society'. This philosophy shone through in the way that he set up the company, and Yakult still works by this philosophy today.

Yakult began its journey in Japan but today 30 million Yakult products are consumed in 32 countries around the world every day.
